26-Year-Old in Court Over Theft of Police Armoured Vehicle in Ashanti Region

NKAWIE, Ghana – A 26-year-old man has appeared before a court in the Ashanti region of Ghana, facing a provisional charge of theft for allegedly stealing a police armoured vehicle.

The suspect, identified as Ebenezer Frimpong, was arrested on April 15, 2026, in Atwima Mim following what authorities have described as a dramatic high-speed pursuit. He made his first court appearance today.

According to police reports, the incident unfolded at Nkawie in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality. The armoured vehicle, with registration number GP 1131, had been parked in front of the Nkawie Market with its engine running. The driver, Lance Corporal Joshua Denkyi of the Formed Police Unit (FPU), had left the vehicle momentarily to visit a nearby pharmacy shop. He was en route from Nkawie to the Regional Police workshop in Kumasi for scheduled servicing of the vehicle.

It was at this moment that Frimpong, who was passing by, allegedly seized the opportunity. Authorities state he jumped into the driver’s seat and sped off in the armoured vehicle, leaving the officer and bystanders in shock.

A combined SWAT team of seven police officers immediately launched a pursuit. The chase, described as "rambo-style," ended on the Abuakwa-Kumasi stretch when the suspect was apprehended in Atwima Mim.

The armoured vehicle has since been recovered and is being held as evidence. Following his arrest, Frimpong was transferred to the Ashanti Regional Criminal Investigations Department for further questioning. He remains in custody at the Abuakwa District Police Command as the legal proceedings continue.
