Accra, Ghana – The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has suspended its constituency chairman for Awutu Senya East, Stephen Ofosu Agyare, for a period of five months effective immediately .
The suspension comes after the party's Functional Executive Committee (FEC) reviewed a petition filed against Agyare by the area's Member of Parliament, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, alongside recommendations from the Central Regional Council of Elders . The FEC, at its July 21, 2026 meeting, found sufficient grounds to invoke Articles 48(4) and 48(6) of the NDC Constitution .
General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey communicated the decision in an official letter, stating that the matter has also been referred to the National Disciplinary Committee for further investigation and appropriate action .
"During the period of your suspension, you are required to refrain from performing any functions or exercising any authority as Constituency Chairman until the matter is finally determined or otherwise directed by the Party," the letter directed .
While the specific contents of the MP's petition remain undisclosed, recent reports indicate a significant rift within the constituency's party leadership . An NDC executive aligned with the MP alleged the dispute stems from a failed marriage proposal, claiming Agyare had proposed to make Okunor his second wife and later asserted she had reneged on an earlier commitment tied to his support for her 2020 parliamentary candidacy .
However, another executive aligned with the suspended chairman has offered a counter-narrative, alleging the MP sidelined Agyare in constituency affairs and denied him certain privileges, including a World Cup travel slot allocated by the Presidency .
The NDC has not officially commented on the specific grounds of the petition as investigations proceed through the party's disciplinary structures .
