BUNKPRUGU, GHANA – A fresh layer of complexity has been added to the long-standing chieftaincy dispute in the Bunkprugu Traditional Area, following a decision by the National House of Chiefs to overturn the recognition of the Paramount Chief.
Naba Alhaji Abuba Nasinmong, who has led the traditional area since 2007, has firmly rejected the ruling that declares his enskinment invalid. Shortly after the decision was announced on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, the chief made his intentions clear, stating that he would immediately seek redress in the nation's highest court.
"I am the rightful owner of Bunkprugu. I don't know how to tell lies… Allah Almighty is in control. This will not end here," Naba Nasinmong declared, signaling his determination to contest the legal and traditional decision.
This latest development marks a dramatic reversal for the chief, who had only recently received official recognition. In a significant turn of events last year, a gazette published on May 7, 2025, formally affirmed his status as the legitimate ruler. That recognition was met with widespread celebration in the township, with many residents hoping it would draw a close to nearly two decades of litigation and unrest that had hampered progress in the area.
The chieftaincy conflict dates back to 2007, when Naba Nasinmong first assumed the skin following the death of his predecessor. His authority was immediately challenged by opposing factions, plunging the community into a protracted legal quagmire that has persisted for 19 years.
The recent ruling by the National House of Chiefs not only nullifies his enskinment but also orders him to return the staff of authority. In response, Naba Nasinmong has confirmed his legal team will file an appeal at the Supreme Court, ensuring that the dispute over the leadership of the Bunkprugu Traditional Area is far from over.
