Sat, 6 Jun 2026 – As the 2026 FIFA World Cup draws near, Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has issued a rallying cry to his teammates, urging them to demonstrate their true quality on the global stage.
Ghana is one of a record ten African nations set to compete in the 23rd edition of the tournament, which will be hosted across North America. The four-time Africa Cup of Nations champions have been drawn into Group L, where they will face Panama, England, and Croatia.
Speaking to FIFA following a recent 1-1 friendly draw against Wales in Cardiff, Ayew emphasized the need for the team to step up and embrace the challenge ahead.
"We have to prove ourselves, and we have to show that we have quality, and we have to be ready for the challenge," Ayew said. He added that while the road will be tough, the team remains prepared. "We all know it's going to be difficult, but we are ready. Obviously, I know people don't think that we will do well, so that is good," the former Leicester City forward noted, suggesting that being underestimated could work in Ghana’s favor.
The Black Stars have already arrived in the United States to finalize their preparations. They will play one more warm-up match against Jamaica on June 10 before their World Cup opener.
Ghana’s group stage schedule is as follows:
- June 17 vs. Panama at BMO Field
- June 23 vs. England at Gillette Stadium
- June 27 vs. Croatia to conclude the group phase
Ayew’s comments reflect a determined mindset as Ghana seeks to make a strong impression and advance beyond the group stage.
