Accra, Greater Accra Region – A wave of tension swept through the Mamprobi Polyclinic on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, after residents and family members stormed the facility following reports that a newborn baby had been stolen.
According to information circulating on social media and confirmed by witnesses at the scene, the incident occurred shortly after the mother delivered her baby via cesarean section. An alleged thief, reportedly dressed in a nurse's uniform, is said to have taken the infant from the premises.
The situation escalated quickly as a crowd, believed to be relatives of the mother, gathered at the clinic. Videos from the scene show them confronting hospital staff, accusing them of complicity in the disappearance. "Someone gave birth through an operation and you have stolen the child to go and sell it. All of you will suffer," one woman was heard shouting in a widely circulated video. Another voice added, "All of them are aware and accomplices. Do you know how she has suffered?"
While some individuals expressed anger, others present could be heard attempting to calm the situation and appeal for order. Unconfirmed reports suggest that closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the facility captured images of the alleged perpetrator. These images are now being shared widely on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) in an effort to identify and locate the suspect.
Security personnel, including police officers, arrived at the clinic later on Tuesday to restore calm and have commenced an investigation into the matter. As of the time of this report, the whereabouts of the newborn remain unknown. Authorities are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the safe return of the baby and the apprehension of the suspect.
